I contracted for a programmer via rentacoder.com to make gedcom files from first the ITIS species database then the full Catalog of Life Database.
The scheme we used was to make each named unique taxonomic unit level as an individual. So each Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species was counted as an individual and the kingdom was the father of the phylums which was the father of the classes which was the father of the orders etc.
The 2010 Catalog of life has 1,257,735 species, which worked out to about 2.1 million individuals/unique taxonomic levels.
